The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has submitted a charge sheet against the lone accused, Md Mojnu, in the case of the rape of a Dhaka University (DU) student.
DB Deputy Commissioner (North Division) Moshiur Rahman said the charge sheet was submitted to a court in Dhaka on Monday.
Earlier, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Forensic Unit head Sheikh Nazmul Alam confirmed a DNA test with samples from the girl and Mojnu, 30, has revealed the latter’s involvement in the crime.
On January 5, a second year student of DU was raped in Kurmitola after she mistakenly got off a bus there around 7pm on her way to a friend’s house at Joar Sahara, also known as Shewra.
The incident caused shockwaves and triggered massive protests by students and humanitarian organizations across the country.
The rape survivor’s father filed a case with Cantonment police station over the incident, which was transferred to the DB police on January 6.
On January 8, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Mojnu in the capital’s Shewra rail crossing area.
The next day, a Dhaka court placed him on a seven-day remand under the custody of DB police.
